Meet realbuzz runner Danielle

Written by realbuzz team | 13 Aug 2024

Learn why Danielle is running for Kidney Care UK in not one but six half marathons!

Q. Tell us about the charity you are supporting through running with realbuzz

"I have chosen the SuperHalfs Series to run as I wanted to take on a challenge after being my husband’s kidney donor last year. My husband went into kidney failure last year due to Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and after months of testing I was finally confirmed a match. We were initially told that this would be extremely unlikely but the gods were on our side and we had a successful transplant on the 30th August. All through the testing and daily dialysis I turned to running to help with my mental well-being but also to ensure I could be as fit as possible for the operation. To celebrate our upcoming kidney versary and to help others going through this devastating journey I have chosen to run for Kidney Care UK."

Q. What's your running experience to date?

I have been running on and off for years and was very active around 10-15 years ago even completing the London Marathon! Getting back into running and completing races has given me back the bug...the feeling of excitement and nerves in race day combined with the energy flowing through all the runners is always a hugely emotional and rewarding way to spend a morning. There really is nothing better than looking around thousands of other runners faces and seeing the determination in their faces. Everyone has their own stories and I run for my hero, my husband. His grit and determination the last year have been nothing short of heroic and if I can help just one person, then I will lace up and go out there and smash every race!

Cardiff will be my first SuperHalfs race and I couldn’t be any more exited! I have been signing up for plenty of 10K races and hitting the streets of London early in the morning for longer runs. I am due to try my first full half marathon in years next month at Richmond Park.

Q. What have you been doing to keep on track?

I have been using the Nike run app to help log my runs which has been great as they have a free dedicated half marathon program. I wouldn’t consider myself a runner, I just enjoy the freedom and the feeling of my body getting stronger after achieving the impossible last year. I am super proud of my body and what it has achieved this far and what it will continue to do so and running will always play a huge part in this.
