At Carers UK - one of our amazing charity partners - their mission is to make life better for the 5.7 million unpaid carers across the UK. Offering information, support, and advice to those who provide care for a loved one, Carers UK work to influence policy and have been campaigning with carers for 50 years, transforming understanding, andwinning critical developments in carers rights.

Did you know, every day, 12,000 people become unpaid carers? And many do not see themselves as carers, often unaware of their legal rights and what they’re entitled to in terms of support and benefits. The charity's aim is to help these individuals recognise and understand their rights, and to access the support available to them, whenever they need it.

Carers Rights Day is a key moment each year where we can come together to raise awareness of the rights of unpaid carers, ensuring that they know what support is available to them. This year, Carers Rights Day is on Thursday 21 November 2024 – and this year’s theme is ‘Recognising your Rights.’

Caring for someone can be rewarding but also physically and emotionally demanding. Here are some essential tips from Careres UK to help the carers out there, not just today but every day:

  1. Take time for yourself: It’s easy to forget, but looking after your own wellbeing is just as important. Schedule small breaks for activities that bring you joy or relaxation, whether it’s reading, walking, or chatting with a friend.

  1. Stay informed about your rights and benefits: There are financial aids, grants, and benefits that may be available to you as a carer. Make sure to stay informed by checking their website or speaking with a local support agency that can provide guidance.

  1. Build a support network: Connecting with other carers can make a huge difference. Sharing experiences, tips, or simply talking to someone who understands can be a great emotional boost. The Carers UK community is a place you can look to, to connect you with others who know what it’s like.

  1. Know it’s okay to ask for help: Asking for support isn’t a sign of weakness. Reach out to friends, family, or professionals when you need an extra hand or just a listening ear. Carers UK are on hand too, with resources, advice as well as someone to talk to through thier helpline via telephone and email and their online support sessions.

  1. Plan for emergencies: Having a plan in place for unexpected situations can ease your mind. Whether it’s arranging alternative care or knowing where to find emergency contacts, preparation can help reduce stress in times of crisis.

If you’re a carer, or know someone who is, we encourage you to explore the full range of resources the Carers UK website and join us in observing Carers Rights Day. Together, we can make sure every carer feels supported and valued.
