The London Landmarks Half Marathon boasts one of the most unique half marathon courses in England and is the only half marathon course to pass through both central London and Westminster. In this next section, we will detail everything that you should know about the course before standing on the start line on race day.
The London Landmarks route is one of the most eventful and entertaining race routes you will find. To keep you motivated as you go, there are many sights to see and course-side entertainment to take in throughout the route.
Runners will line up at the start line on the famous Pall Mall before heading past Nelson's Column towards Leicester Square and the historic Somerset House. From there the route will take you along the embankment of the River Thames past Blackfriars station and then up towards St Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Court of Justice.
The next portion of the course is jam-packed with sights as you pass the Guildhouse, the Bank of England, the Cheese Grater, the Gherkin, the Walkie-Talkie, and the monument to the Great Fire of London. You will then be taken back along the River Thames towards the Tower of London and Tower Bridge where you will turn around and head all along the river until you reach Westminster Bridge.
From there, you cross over Westminster towards the London Eye, before crossing back over, passing Big Ben and entering the last mile. You will then cross the finish line by Downing Street.
The incredibly iconic landmarks that the marathon course passes are not all the course has to offer. In fact, one of the most unique parts of the course is the huge amount of on-course entertainment stations. As runners pass different points of the course, they will be met by different musical performances, DJs, dancers, themed stations, and so much more.
Along the route, there will be musical performances from bands such as the London Gay Men's Chorus, Bar Salsa DJ, The Entertainers Steel Band, Rock Choir, International Gospel Choir, London Show Choir, The Pantasy Steel Band, and so many more.
There will also be several incredible dance acts along the route from dance groups such as Rhythm Club, Shimmy Cafe Barefoot Dance Fusion, UK China Performing Arts, and Hammersmith Morris.
The London Landmarks Half Marathon is a favourite amongst many for attempting personal bests and faster times. This is because the conditions are typically very ideal for strong running. You can expect the average temperature to be around 7-15°C (however we are not weather experts so this can definitely change).
The course is also all on very flat road surfaces which makes it perfect for fast running. So if you are looking for the perfect race with ideal conditions to run a personal best, the London Landmarks Half Marathon is the perfect event for you.
There are a vast number of different aid stations located along the half marathon course to ensure that all runners are sufficiently looked after. Dotted around the course there are numerous water stations, first aid stations, cheer stations and toilet stations.
Closer to the time of the race you will be provided with a fully accurate race map which will show exactly where the stations are located along the course. This will allow you to fully plan out your race and be aware of everything worth knowing on the course.
Now that you know everything you need to know about the event, we have put together a few tips to ensure the London Landmarks Half Marathon is a day to remember.
Take the stress out of making it to the start line. Over 18,000 people will be taking part in this one event and will all be trying to get to the start line at a similar time to you. Because of this, you should ensure that you leave for the event with plenty of time and take into account that public transport, taxis and roads will be busier than usual and many roads will be closed.
This will help to ensure that you make it to the start line for your start time, without any unnecessary added stresses. Check the event information pack for all the information regarding road closures, parking, and transport.
It is super important that you treat the event as you would every other run. By this we mean, take your time with your warm-up. Make sure that you are fully warmed up and ready to go the moment you pass the start line.
As with all running events, there is typically a prolonged period before the event where you will be standing around waiting. Utilise this time. Take part in one of the many group warm-ups that will be taking place or do your warm-up.
Making sure that your legs are fully warm and ready to go will allow you to go out and feel your best from the very start. It will also help to ensure that you do not pick up any injuries or strains that could significantly impede your race during the first few miles.
As we have tried to reiterate many times throughout this guide, the London Landmarks Half Marathon course is incredibly unique and exciting. Therefore, we would always recommend that you make sure to take in all of the beauty and history of the course.
As with most larger events, headphones are strongly discouraged for safety reasons. However, the flat roads, roadside entertainment and iconic sights mean that this is not a problem. Think about it, how many times will you be running through the most famous streets of London surrounded by cheering crowds, live music, and incredible dancers? So make the most out of every mile.
