I run regularly, have a healthy diet, don't drink excessively but just can't shift the weight!
Any advise?
I run two or three times a week up to about 5 or 6 miles around 9 minutes/mile. I weigh about 14 and a half stone and my weight just will not come down.
Do I need to vary my training more? Do I need to look at my diet? could there be an underlying medical reason?
I've read about underactive thyroid, but is this common in a man? I do ocassionally suffer from night sweats, tiredness, moody all of which could be symptoms. I do not like taking medicine/drugs to help so is there a natural way I could improve my health?
Hi Althea,
Thanks for the advise.
Going to try the food diary and activity sheet, I was thinking of looking at herbal / natural remedies as I do seem to be suffering from most of the symptoms of an underactive thyroid. In some ways I'm my own worst enemy because I try to avoid doctor's unless I absolutely need them.
Will have a look into alternatives, but look at the diet first and see if things can improve. I do eat healthily and try to keep active but sometimes haven't got the drive to go out for a run or increase my running, I really want the weight to shift before increasing my chance of injury as I have suffered long term injury in the past and it's taken me three and a half years to get to where I currently am.
Sounds a good plan, if you need help calculating your energy need and food diary etc drop me a line.. If I were you I would get checked out at the doctors, as I understand it a simple blood test will tell them if u have a thyroid problem.. go book an appointment!
Do you belong to a running club?? might help with the motivation.. are you eating the right things b4 exercise and after exercise??
Althea
You need to fully maximise cho stores b4 exercise by eating low Gi foods and after exercise replace cho stores quickly with high Gi foods.. if running over 1hr I would suggest 50/50 250ml fruit juice and water to keep cho replaced (start drinking 20 mins into exercise)
