Overview

It's time again to update my overview. I have run the last two Great North Runs and for various reasons didn't train properly for either of them. 2010 will see me on the South Shields road again a few months after my 62nd birthday. However this one will be different as I shall be following a structured plan from today 10 November 2009 rather than starting a hit and miss one in March or April. My last two times were 3.17 and 3 26 and this year I am aiming for 2.30ish. Yes that's right, nearly an hour quicker. Just goes to prove that I am still the silly old $od that I have always claimed to be. Matt Hart has kindly taken me under his wing (or the toe of his boot) to help me do this and I shall be giving him my full commitment. In addition I intend to raise sponsorship for Parkinson's Disease Society purely because this is Matt's pet charity this year. So with about 45 weeks to go, my road to Shields starts here. Wish me luck.

This week I have had two reasonable runs (for me), and two good walks. I am feeling old and achey. I have had a return of the old wrinkly feet and various other niggles.

In March 1927, Parry-Thomas was a contender for the land speed record, At Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire he crashed in his car "Babs" and was killed. His mechanics buried Babs in the sand dunes beside the beach. I think that the time has come to make this last effort to reach South Shields in a respectable time and then bury my shoes in the sand dunes beside the beach. I doubt that in future years my shoes will be disintered and installed in a museum as has happened with Babs.

After my good intentions collapsing by the wayside at the weekend, I was determined to put up a better show this week. My last good (?) run was on 13th December when I managed 1.67 miles in 24 mins of walk run. Repeated that today and although the walk/run pattern was wrong the ratio was right. I also ran more uphill than in December. Same time gave me 1.74 miles with obvious increases in average pace and speed. Not much I know, but good enough for me at the moment.

-------is extended to our doubting Thomas friend Klebe. Next winter you can stay with me. Get up at 05.30 and before 06.30 scrape the ice and snow off the car. Drive for two and a half miles in a cold car to town. Unhitch, position and level a 1 tonne trailer. Fill and light boiler and fryer. Take car to car park and walk half mile back to trailer. Wait until 09.00 to open. Sit around hoping for a customer until 16.00. Drain fryer of oil. wind up all corner jacks and put everything away for travelling. Walk to car park for car. Hitch trailer and drive home reversing trailer into garden in the dark. Replenish trailer and wash tools. Lucky to get boots off by 16.45. Shiver until bed time. Repeat tomorrow and the day after. Don't come on Saturday because that is 2 hours longer. RSVP.

Got out again this afternoon after a little gardening. Same time/plan/route as yesterday but got to 1.4 miles in the 17 minutes. Nice warmth in legs. Just got to keep this up until my head settles into the routine. Take care-----------Rod.

Perhaps I should introduce myself again as I have not blogged since 19 January. That is probably not necessary though as it's usually a case of once encountered--never forgotten. Actually, I had a poke from Malcolm last week to see if I was OK. Thanks Malcolm, it's nice to have somebody to love.

As you will recall, I had got myself moving nicely before the snow struck in early December when that really stopped me in my tracks. In my defence, I defy any of you to spend 10 hour days standing outside in minus temperatures and then want to go out again when you get home. I am still scraping frost off the car at 06.30 most mornings and I have had enough of it now. Remind me not to complain about rain next Winter. Reading your blogs about you doing silly mileage has not helped my frame of mind and although I have managed a couple of little plods per week for the last couple of weeks, I have still not got my head round the idea again. This has got to change this week so I have just done 1.38 miles in 17 minutes by which time you lot would have showered and had a meal before I got home. Then I remember my advancing years and think "Sod it" I'm OK. Do you know the story of the old bull and the young bull standing at a gate looking at a herd of cows. The young bull says "let's jump the gate and have a couple of cows" The old bull replies" No-----let's wait for the farmer to open the gate and we can have them all" So I am quite happy to be the tortoise to all you hares.

I shall leave you now to carry on with your sterling efforts in the hope that by the weekend I have completed a full week of the plan. Take care all-------Rod.

It was harder getting out there than the actual run. Very pleased after 5 weeks off. Have not got round to tackling the foliage yet but noticed today that I swallowed no flies so perhaps it makes a good sieve (but not for soup). Am also going to have another attempt at kicking the fags. I am really starting to not like myself most times that I light up.

With the recent weather on top of Christmas and New Year working, I have not had a run since 16th December.

Nor have I had a shave!!!!!!  AAArrrrggghhhhh!!

This week will see an end to that however. Today I shall be getting rid of the hirsute look and tomorrow I shall resume the training plan for September. This morning I have entered the Great North 10k which will be here in Sunderland on 18th July which should be a good pre GNR workout. This really is a convenient one for me as I can do my usual Sunday work startup routine, then wander across the bridge to the start area, and at the end wander back to complete the afternoon on the Donuts.

Now-----------where is my razor?

In the absence of any running due to this awful weather, I give you this little offering. The reverse is dated 6 January 1950 making this little chap 18 months old. Who would believe the havoc that he managed to cause through the next 60 years? Why can't I ever get the spacing right when I try to give you a picture?

New Years Day and a day off for me. Haven't run for over a fortnight with this weather. Last couple of days have seen some heavy rain and sleet which has washed away all but the most stubborn patches of ice.  An early night for me last night as usual. Out of bed this morning to find about three inches of snow outside and big lazy flakes falling that w don't see very often but which always mean more to come. So it looks like today is cancelled too. Dammit!. Just as I was getting into this game at last. Hope the Council gritters get rid of the stuff in the centre before work tomorrow or I will be suffering the t--ts who must throw snowballs. They don't seem to realize the dangers of a lump of snow hitting my fryer with it's 20 litres of hot oil. I suppose ther is a lot more to worry about in this world so lets hope and pray for a better and more ppeaceful decade than the last one has been. Have a great year folks. ---------Rod.
