The blog of a first time, not very good, slightly old, often injured trainee marathon runner. I have been 'running' since Feb 2008 and managed to plod round a half marathon in March 2009 but due to constant injuries haven't built any kind of consistency, I suppose this is what happens if one takes a 20 year break from exercise and then chooses running as the best value mid-life crisis.

2009 went well compared with 08. Only 12 weeks injured, my first half-marathon and some limited success with 'minimal' running shoes helped reduce injury. And I still love doing races!

2010 will be interesting to say the least. Tongue out

  • 5k : 24:11 23:52
  • 5 mile : 39:57
  • 10k : 49:49  48:16 New
  • 10 mile : 1:26:28
  • Half : 1:58:33 1:53:08

Decided with all the injuries that I can't get the mileage in for a 2010 marathon after all, not in any structured way at least so will postpone for a year and maybe try London if successful in the ballot.

Olivia Newton-John Broke My Knee

So after much alteration of training plans and deciding not to do any more short events until after the marathon I set out on my first long run of the training plan, 10 miles very slow. I was all kitted out with new waist pack and new mp3 player with radio (i get bored of my own music).

I had a niggle in the left knee all the way, probably caused by Friday's 10k but thought little of it.

Then after 6.5 miles with 'Your The One That I Want' playing on the radio and my thoughts wandering to the leather trousers in that video, my knee just collapsed beneath me and I stumbled to the floor in a heap.

Well that was it I'm afraid, I hobbled home feeling very sorry for myself. It hurts quite a lot now at the outside and back of the knee. Will see how it goes with icing etc etc.

Having read bicyclerepairman's blog post earlier it is just a running injury and it is just a marathon and both of these come and go all the time.

Leather trousers + ONJ = Bad news for male runners....will have to check my Ipod to ensure none of Grease has got on there

Hopefully its only a temporary thing that will clear up with icing and a short rest.

Chin up fella

Whoa ONJ did that to you?! She's good at bringing men down to their knees! Glad to hear you're sounding positive though. It really does work positive mental attitude. RICE the knee and hopefully it'll come gd in a few days. It's all the stress you put on it doing that 10k. You know it'll be fine after a bit of TLC.

Well I hope it's nothing too serious and you're up and running again soon. Maybe that Olivia Newton John should come round and rub it better. I reckon it's the least she could do, seeing as this was all her fault!

Feel I may have tempted fate with my earlier post! That's tough - I guess you just have to see how it is in a couple of days and take it from there. Chin up.

Olivia making you weak at the knees!
How weird that your knee gave out. Mine did that once - just running along and my leg buckled. Very weird. It was around the time I was having problems with my hamstring. Never happened again though.
Hope you get it sorted and it was a weird one off.

Hope the icing helps. Get to a sports physio asap to get it checked out

You need to lay off the ONJ - perhaps Susan Boyle will have less of an effect on you. I download podcasts onto my ipod and have a good old chuckle on my long runs.

Do the RICE thing and the knee should respond. It may be giving you a warning.

any doubts then go to a professional sooner rather than later

Hope the knee get's better.

And sorry the post wasn't meant to be so sombre I just wanted to emphasize that it takes something very special for me to do a 5K.
