Overview

I started running in the summer of 2007 and did the Great South Run that year being inspired by my wife who "Raced for Life" after a year of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

I continue to try to run, much to the amusement of my family, struggling to fit running in around a full time job and a busy family life outside work.

Races planned for 2010

One small step for mankind…

Apologies to Neil Armstrong and the heroics of the Apollo 11 mission, but I couldn’t think of a better title for today’s post.

Since I last blogged (and I now find myself wallowing on page 6 on the blogs) I have continued my stretches, heat massage and posture exercises. The numb leg has eased and I did nothing for another week. I saw the physiotherapist last Wednesday, generally she seemed pleased with progress. I got my own car back on the Tuesday and was getting less numbness from the driving. She did her usual stretching and twisting and the back clicked and popped, the hamstring and gluteals were “tenderly” kneaded and I came up against the sharp end of an interferential machine. It was rather like having my back and buttock scrubbed with barbed wire. Half way through she asked how I was, and after the grimacing “OK…just” she turned it down slightly. At the end of that she said I could start to do a bit more if it felt ok. At the time it felt like a sick joke, but did seem easier as the days went by.

Saturday, I had to do some tidying up in the garden. You may recall I got a new shed a few weeks back and as all men know, it is impossible to spend too much time in a shed. Sunday the heavens opened and there was no way I was going to run in that only to discover a mile in that I would have to walk home. So tonight I ventured out for the first time for two weeks. While offspring was at piano lesson I did a very gentle 1 mile loop, twice. What’s more the first loop was so gentle, I did a negative split on the second.  What’s even more, no niggles.

I intend to back to the gym tomorrow to try and keep the rest of me fit, and may do a bit of gentle treadmill stuff, then its back to the physioterrorist on Wednesday, when I hope to persuade her to leave me alone.

Just in case any of the comments on the last post caused any confusion “Names mean nothing” is my son who is called Richard – shortened to “Rich” (hence the names mean nothing tag) – and we found out a week or so ago that he is only an inch shorter than me. My days are numbered.

I had my “Swine Flu Jab” today –so with that and my normal flu jab, looks like I’m working through till March non stop! Hey ho!

Hope everyone out there is doing some good running, because I'm not....yet

gld you're getting back into it. Even if you have had to suffer to get there. Damb physios. Although, give me a physio over a doctor any day.

Good to hear you're back in the land of the runners. You've not lost any of your wit while "resting" ... I just loved the physioterrorist reference!

For the past 6months I have officially been the shorted member of our family - unless you count the dogs and cat. And if the dogs are on their back legs there's not much to choose between us either. I have sensed a definite drop in the respect levels. I can always don some killer heels - what will you do?

My lad overtook me last year - they don't half like to look down on you now!! I can still beat him up though so that's ok! ;0)

Take the comeback gently. Enjoy the physio terrorist!
