I feel a bit of a fraud because I'm not really a runner or even a jogger! I am well and truly a walker....
Sitting in the pub last November with friend Steph we decided it sounded like fun to sign up to walk 100km in less than 30 hours in the Yorkshire dales. This was not just on a mad whim after to many halfs of local ale, this was to raise money for Oxfam. We anticipated we might have to train a little bit. But hey it's only walking how hard can it possibly be. We recruited two more team members, and then recruited two more when the first two quit.
I completed my first challenge event on April 22nd a 22 mile walk in the central lake district.
Followed by a 40 mile challenge in early May.
Then on May 30th it was time for the big one! 63 Miles, and we made it despite the heat, injury and illness we crossed the line after 28 hours - as I crossed the line I declared "never, ever again - I quit excersise its far too much hard work"
It took about 24 hours ........
Then team mate Sue and I began to wonder could we hit the golden 24 hours if we went back next year!
then friend Lozza decided that after being support crew she was inspired and fancied ago at the South Downs version Trailwalker next year - well why not I thought - both Trails in a single year.... I have a year to train, I can do that!
Then on June 24th a post went on Trailwalker 2009's facebook group - a team the 'realbuzz fruitcakes' (they all blog on here!) had lost a team member ...
So hey whats another 63 miles between friends..even those you havent met yet!
So I guess this blog is from here to wherever I get and I've got from Flumpy Sofa Addict to here in 5 months ........see the journey so far in more detail at
I'm trying to get the enthusiasm up to pack my bag and get out on the hills. It's just harder by your self. Trailtrekker training was as much a team task as the actual challenge (or least on the weekends) we trained over 700Km as a three!
I really need to go today I told the husband last night I thought I should get out and do a long walk this weekend and he agreed "Yes you haven't done much Trailwalker training have you" - helpful as ever! I was slightly incensed -" I walked 63 miles as part of the training " he chuckled "you did dear, but what have you been training for since then? to drink Pear Cider and eat curry at every check point"
So here I am ...... the weather is perfect, over cast breaks of blue. My friend has my co-ordiantes and knows when I should be back by, all I have to do is go....I'm going .... soon....
Walking on your own must be tough....but hopefully you will get out there and enjoy it
