Overview

Hi everyone!

In summer 2006 I looked like this:

I'd lost 3 stone with Slimming World, and was about to run my first 5k race. Not long after I signed up to run the London Marathon, something I'd wanted to do since watching Peter Duncan run the first one on Blue Peter as a kid, and then stopped running for the summer.

The following April I looked like this:

I'd regained the 3st, and more. The dismal experience was the complete opposite of what I'd always dreamed, and I stopped running for the summer - again.

I didn't give up though, and rejoined Slimming World, shifted some of the weight and started up the running again. This time I trained using a run/walk programme, and it paid off with pb's at the Reading Half and Edinburgh Marathon, and much better experiences.

Edinburgh was the real turning point, and unlike after London when I stopped running, I was out only 6 days later running 2 miles non-stop. I haven't looked back since, and am now training to run without the walking, and am getting faster (having lost over 4 stone as of September 2008). My pace has gone from around 15/16 minute miles to around 11:00 mins, and I'm aiming to get that to under 10 minute miling by my next marathon.

In 2008 I completed the New Forest Half, only walking through the drinks stations and up 3 small bits of hills. I never thought I would be able to run 13.1 miles almost non-stop. Losing the weight has given me so much confidence in my abilities, and I've had some overwhelming support from fellow bloggers. Things can only get better from here.

I currently look like this:

My advice to anyone thinking about running (or taking on any challenge that may initially seem unattainable) is to just go for it. Don't worry about your size, or your speed, or what other people think, but smile at the fact that you are the one out there making the effort. If you persevere it will get easier. Even if you don't succeed at first, keep trying and you will get there, and will learn so much on the way.

Needs more steam!

After procrastinating with the painting yesterday and spending most of it producing a lovely spreadsheet calendar of now until Christmas (detailsing what money I have when, what bills need paying when, what presents I am able to buy when, and how much I have left over for the small matter of food), I procrastinated again today. Only this time I slapped a second coat of paint on while dithering abotu the run.

BUT, run was planned so run Idid, and did a fine impression of a steam train! No, not chuffing along at some great speed, puffing and wheezing like a 50-a-day smoker! Felt like I set off too fast, but soon settled down, and it felt marginally better than Mondays run. Legs weren't so heavy, so it has to be a positive. What WASN'T so positive, was that it was slower! Did the same 2m in 23:58 (12:02 & 11:55), so slower by 24 seconds, and the breathing and chest were no better. But at least I went out there and did it!

Brighton is still looking a very long way to go, but I will get there. Considering how long it is since I did any decent training, I'm prepared to take small steps. I'm fed up with doing well and then it all going wrong at the last minute and I end up back at square one. I've got my copy of Run Less Run Faster out, and while I won't have the miles in my legs to be able to follow the plan (even if it would be the 5hr Boston qualifier for women over 75!), I'm going to try mixing the suggested sessions with Hals long run distances, as the speeds for the sessions seem pretty doable. Need to get the miles up a bit first, and have a few weeks grace to get myself back to 3 times a week.

Next run is Friday, as with School & tempting injury I will only run monday, wednesday and friday now, but I'm not sure if I will have time to get out. Tomorrow will be a trip into town to buy Becky her birthday presents, then friday I will be making birthday cake ready for the afternoon. Will also be hastily trying to get the house straight for company in the evening ;0). Busy weekend too - Saturday is the New Forest Transition second big meeting. I went to the first one last year and it was great. This year will be better being directly involved. Then on Sunday Becky is having a few friends round for tea. Can't afford a party, but half a dozen friends to play will do her just as well I think. Will probably mean more tidying and lots of cooking, and another birthday cake!

Come on Kim you know that a few seconds here or there from week to week makes no difference in the long run - the main thing is you got out there and did it.

Wow you sound really organised with all that crimbo planning already

Wanna come round and sort ours out?

I honestly don't know how you fit everything in! You make me tired just reading about it! I thought I was organised, but nothing compared to you! Good for you!

24 secs here or there is nothing as I am sure you know. The time spent getting yourself organised for Christmas is well spent especially for peace of mind. And - half a dozen friends round to play and a cake is a party in my book. Hope it all goes well.
