Overview

Hi everyone!

In summer 2006 I looked like this:

I'd lost 3 stone with Slimming World, and was about to run my first 5k race. Not long after I signed up to run the London Marathon, something I'd wanted to do since watching Peter Duncan run the first one on Blue Peter as a kid, and then stopped running for the summer.

The following April I looked like this:

I'd regained the 3st, and more. The dismal experience was the complete opposite of what I'd always dreamed, and I stopped running for the summer - again.

I didn't give up though, and rejoined Slimming World, shifted some of the weight and started up the running again. This time I trained using a run/walk programme, and it paid off with pb's at the Reading Half and Edinburgh Marathon, and much better experiences.

Edinburgh was the real turning point, and unlike after London when I stopped running, I was out only 6 days later running 2 miles non-stop. I haven't looked back since, and am now training to run without the walking, and am getting faster (having lost over 4 stone as of September 2008). My pace has gone from around 15/16 minute miles to around 11:00 mins, and I'm aiming to get that to under 10 minute miling by my next marathon.

In 2008 I completed the New Forest Half, only walking through the drinks stations and up 3 small bits of hills. I never thought I would be able to run 13.1 miles almost non-stop. Losing the weight has given me so much confidence in my abilities, and I've had some overwhelming support from fellow bloggers. Things can only get better from here.

I currently look like this:

My advice to anyone thinking about running (or taking on any challenge that may initially seem unattainable) is to just go for it. Don't worry about your size, or your speed, or what other people think, but smile at the fact that you are the one out there making the effort. If you persevere it will get easier. Even if you don't succeed at first, keep trying and you will get there, and will learn so much on the way.

And..... ?

Well, along with many others, and as most of you will know, I'm once again part of the rejects club. 3 in a row now, and ever closer to the guaranteed place.

I have to, once again, apologise for my lack of blogging and commenting recently. I think everything has caught up with me over the last couple of weeks. I've done no training, and seem to have been on a one woman eating mission. Neither particulalry brilliant preparation for the GER next weekend. It's going to hurt, big time, but I seem to be under the impression that as I've done 4 halfs already i will be able to do it. Yep, just call me dellusional. I'm only going for the bloggers anyway ;0).

Yesterday was a bit of a turning point though, and I'm slowly dragging myself back to form. Had an urgent email from Radio Solent yesterday - they were panicking as I was supposed to be on this morning and they couldn't phone me. That will be because I've changed my number and completely forget when I was due to go on air, and so forgot to let them know the new one. Still, all sorted and update 3 was broadcast this morning.

Have had my mind focussed on the running thanks to the ballot results coming out. Once I've done the GER I will have 5 weeks before the Gosport Half, and the last half of year 1 of the fundraising. Haven't raised as much as I'd hoped, what with everything going on over the summer, but hopefully I will make that up next year. I do have an event in the pipeline that I will explain more about very soon. Just in case there's anyone close enough to pop on down.

Can't promise I will catch up any time soon, but I will certainly try. Congratulations to everyone who got in through the ballot, or who has taken up a charity place, and commiserations to those who are not relieved by not getting in. I now have a big dilemma - do I go back to Edinburgh, where I had a fab time last year, or do I go to Brighton fo rthe new marathon? I think I will probably end up trying for Brighton when more places become available in November. It's closer, though hillier, and I like to be at the first of something lol. Was quite interested by the inaugural kilomathon, but it's the same day as the local 10k I do, and as I've run each year it's been held, I have to enter that one.

Far too many decisions lol

Sorry you didn't get a place but, as you say, you're getting closer to the point where you automatically get in. Maybe I'll see you at Gosport.

Your training for the GER sounds like my training for the GNR. Like you I've had 3 rejections now - hopefully next year

And I'm still reading your blogs too. 3 in a row for me as well. What's the betting we both get in next year as 2012 they will want all the 'fast' runners so they put on a good show for the Olympics? If I do get in next year I will defer, rumour has it the VLM 2012 will finish in the new Olympic stadium. Think they might change the deferral rules?

I must admit I am having problems keeping up with other blogs myself at the moment, good luck next weekend, I am coming up for the day but not running.
