Overview

Hi everyone!

In summer 2006 I looked like this:

I'd lost 3 stone with Slimming World, and was about to run my first 5k race. Not long after I signed up to run the London Marathon, something I'd wanted to do since watching Peter Duncan run the first one on Blue Peter as a kid, and then stopped running for the summer.

The following April I looked like this:

I'd regained the 3st, and more. The dismal experience was the complete opposite of what I'd always dreamed, and I stopped running for the summer - again.

I didn't give up though, and rejoined Slimming World, shifted some of the weight and started up the running again. This time I trained using a run/walk programme, and it paid off with pb's at the Reading Half and Edinburgh Marathon, and much better experiences.

Edinburgh was the real turning point, and unlike after London when I stopped running, I was out only 6 days later running 2 miles non-stop. I haven't looked back since, and am now training to run without the walking, and am getting faster (having lost over 4 stone as of September 2008). My pace has gone from around 15/16 minute miles to around 11:00 mins, and I'm aiming to get that to under 10 minute miling by my next marathon.

In 2008 I completed the New Forest Half, only walking through the drinks stations and up 3 small bits of hills. I never thought I would be able to run 13.1 miles almost non-stop. Losing the weight has given me so much confidence in my abilities, and I've had some overwhelming support from fellow bloggers. Things can only get better from here.

I currently look like this:

My advice to anyone thinking about running (or taking on any challenge that may initially seem unattainable) is to just go for it. Don't worry about your size, or your speed, or what other people think, but smile at the fact that you are the one out there making the effort. If you persevere it will get easier. Even if you don't succeed at first, keep trying and you will get there, and will learn so much on the way.

As it was lovely and sunny again today I decided to take the kids into town so I could buy a new swimsuit. Birthday money was burning a hole in my purse lol.

First port of call, JJB. Five minutes later I'm the proud owner of a 100% chlorine resistent, 20 times more fade resistsent, quick drying black Speedo swimsuit, with blue go-faster trim. It says 'Endurance' on the label. Can I claim fasle advertising if it doens't work? Two sizes smaller the current costume, so hopefully it will fit better.

After lunch at McDonalds I set about the task of trying to find some boots. Last time I was in town (admittedly a little while ago now) there were boots everywhere, and just the ones I was looking for. True to form, whenever I actually want something I'm always too late. It's all summer stuff now, isn't it? I dragged the kids round practically every shop that sold shoes (of a reasonable price) I could think of. Nothing. Apart from a couple of pairs I didn't really like. I was also looking for a skirt to wear with them, but couldn't find anything anywhere that wasn't a mini. And there were very few of them. Does nobody wear skirts these days? Had to remind myself to walk out of the Inspire section in New Look as I no longer need big sizes and can fit into stuff from their regular section :).

Traipsed everywhere. Gave up on the skirt, will have to make do :(, then decided to look in TK Max. Don't usually like the shop, but I found boots! Forty flippin quid! By some brand called Bullboxer, if it means anything. They are the second most expensive shoes I own after my trainers. Bye bye birthday money lol. At least they will last - they are so high (relative to trainers and not other heels) I probably won't be able to walk in them. Will be wearing my usual boots for the trip down memory lane next weekend, and changing just before the gig. I can't cripple myself too much with a marathon to run!

I did try finding a picture, but can't. They have stiletto heels, 5 buckles on, and zips up the back. Just the sort I used to live in when I was at college. Fab. The old me is coming back :). Thomas is now staggering round the living room in them.

Seeing as this is supposed to be a running blog, I should really connect it somehow lol. Saw lots of people in Sport Relief garb with medals and got a little jealous. Would have loved to have done it with the kids, but it kiind of passed me by, and I never know if I will be able to get into town or not. Next year we will do it though.

Hope everyone doing the mile (or more) had a good day, as well as those at the various races. Hope you all had the good weather we've had here.

Thanks to needing to deal with a sensitive email yesterday (after getting fully motivated by Eddie), I didn't get time to go out for the 16 miles. The only way to do it would be to turn up for school at the end of it, and I couldn't inflict myself on fellow parents in that condition. Not 100% I'd have made it up the hill that soon afterward either.

So this morning I had my weetabix, followed by elevenses to keep me going through lunch time, and got the treadmill out. Now I've got past the 'can't do more than half a mile without giving up the will to live and sliding off the back in a snotty mess' mental block, I don't actually find it that bad. Nowhere near as good as being outside, but much better than it used to be, as long as you treat it as a tredmill run and don't compare it with outdoor runs. I've always found it much harder than outdoors, a slower pace on the 'mill feels tougher than a faster pace outside.

Anyway, armed myself with water, lucozade, wine gums (can't do the stickiness of jelly babies any more) and a gel for 10m, stuck Marathon Talk and a Terry Pratchett audiobook on the ipod, and off I went.

Pit stop at 4m and all was going well. Then the legs started to get a little heavy. Stopped again a couple of miles later, just briefly, and realised my head was starting to ache. Certainly wasn't down to dehydration as I was dripping. Even with the heating turned off it was a tad warm indoors! Had a quick look on facebook when I filled the water up at 8m, got up, and felt a little woosy for a moment. Head still hurt, so I decided to call it a day.

I hadn't eaten properly from Saturday to Thursday after coming down with mild effects from the D&V bugs that are going round, but as it didn't come to anything from either end, just general horrible grumbly feelings, I've still pushed on with the training. Think I'm feeling the accumulated effects.

I know the better trained amoung you would probably have carried on regardless, but I am in unknown territory and am acutely aware I need to get to Brighton in one piece. I may have done 2 marathons already, but this is the first I've trained properly for. London in 2007 I got the place in the summer '06, chose a plan based on what time I would like to finish in (4:30 I think), and then did nothing until the autumn. Two way too ambitious training runs later (I'n only started running in the April!) and I had shin splints. From the January I only managed the long runs, needing the week in between to recover, was walking downstairs backwards in agony, and my longest tun was Silverstone. FLM was a pretty horrible experience.

I started back from scratch again for Edinburgh, and decided run/walk was the best approach. I had good 10k and half races doing this, and Edinburgh was brilliant, with the wheels only falling off in the last 3 miles. Training still wasn't to plan as I ended up with plantar faciitis this time, and didn't get past 13/14 miles in training.

So I know I can do the distance on the training I've done up to now, training has been a lot more consistent this year, and I'm a lot lighter, so if I don't hit my 16 miles it's not the end of the world. I need to get the confidence to push my body, but I can only do that it I know what it's capable of. I've never run 16/18/20 miles over 3 weekends before, so maybe I am erring on the side of caution a bit too much, but my training isn't stopping after Brighton. I need to be a reasonable state to be able to take advantage of the good base training to carry on for Snowdonia with some good solid running over the summer. If I push too much now I could easily end up injured and back to square one again.

So, a good week's eating now the tummy is fine again, the usual training, though I will be sorry not to do the hills on Monday as the kids are off. Erm, did I really just say that? And Friday will be an out and back 16/18 miler. If I'm feeling good I will go the extra to 9 miles before turning round, so I won't have any choice but to do the distance.

I would like to get a 20 in the following week, but will have to see how I feel after next week. Fitting a 20 in means I will only get 2 weeks taper, but as I don't know how the body will hold up to the miles (yes it's done Edinburgh ok and I ran 2 great miles 6 days later, but that was without the cycling and swimming as well), so it's all a case of see what happens.

Tomorrow I will be taking the kids into town to buy a new swimsuit. For me, not them. And some new boots. When I was at college I used to live in stiletto boots with chains or buckles on. LOVED them. They were 'me'. But over the year 'me' has been lost. Since I found the old clothes in the loft AND can get into most of them, the old me is starting to resurface, and as I'm going to see Editors next Sunday I feel the need for some new boots. Ok, birthday money should really go on the swuimsuit and a bottle cage for the bike, but sometimes you've just got to do something reckless. Adn I will have the flatties in the car for when the feet are crippled after standing through the gig. The Monday's hills may be in question lol.

Right, off for a shower and then to turn the house upside down trying to find some photos I promised to email someone. Don't you just hate it when you know you've seen something recently, but haven't a clue where?

Something happened today that very rarely happens in this house. I let housework get in the way of training. Please forgive me for my wayward behaviour. Trouble was, I was beginning to lose the kitchen under the washing up and would soon have had to get the picnic plates out to eat from! Have NO idea what came over me, but I really hope it doesn't happen again. I can't be called domesticated!

I missed a bike ride, but as Tuesday will be my long bike day I didn't feel too bad, and I do have the 16m run tomorrow. I can afford to miss the odd Thursday ride in favour of the Friday run as the bike miles don't start ramping up for a few weeks, and getting the long runs in is more inportant at the moment. I have 3 heavy weeks with 16, 18 & 20 miles, and I'm very conscious that I've never done this before, so I don't want to overdo it. It may sound like I'm making excuses, but my marathon training (for either of them) hasn't exactly been according to plan, and I've not gone this far with long runs before, and have never had 3 in a tow, so I'm making sure I get to the start in one piece.

Realised I forgot to say what I did in the pool in yesterdays blof. And no funny comments now I've read how that sounds! Don't have much time on a Wednesday, so it's technique day. Did the usualy 20 length, but upped the crawl to 6 lengths, AND did 2 in a row! Will have to start working on learning turns soon :).

Had a break from the housework in the afternoon. Some chap from Southern Electric called to say I was paying too much for my energy and would I like to save a bit. Now Paul sorted all that out and chopped and changed all ove rthe place, so I wans't actually sure who I was with (found it to be British Gas), so I was up for saving a bit of money. Now after I let on the husband dealth with it and was no longer here so I didn't have a clue, I'm sure he started trying to chat me up! He was talking about all sorts, and asked, as he could see I was a very nice lady, if he could have a cuppa, cheeky sod. Apparently his lady had walked out on him 3 months ago...etc etc lol. Now it's been a very long time since I've been in any sort of position like that, and boy was I out of practice lol. Made me laugh though, especially as I saw him waving at me from a colleagues van as I walked to get the kids.

Still, as 'new-bloke-that-could-be-anything-bloke' phoned me to wish me happy birthday last night, and said I would be meeting his kids when I go to see Editors next Sunday, I think I should really behave myself, just in case. Really wasn't sure if I would even get to say hello to him when I went, let alone have him categorically say I WILL be meeting his kids! Not something I've been expecting, certainly not since he said he didn't think he was ready for the relationship thing. Men are definitely full of surprises, and never seem to know what they want.

Suddenly getting very excited about Editors now, and was singing away to them on the ipod on the way to school. It's great to be looking forward to a night out (last one being Snow PAtrol in November, unless you count dinner at my sisters at Christmas). My best mate is picking me up and we will drive to Portsmouth reminiscing about my uni days and the slightly inebriated fun we had, and may even pop in the pub where I got talking to a sailor chappie as he was drinking a pint of 'green' that looked interesting. Not been back to Portsmouth in far too long. Holds lots of memories, from way before I lived there, right back to when I was a kid.

Have decided that along with the somewhat essential swimsuit, I also need some somewhat essential stilletto boots. The old me is most definitely coming back, and I used to live in stiletto boots, usually with buckles or chains adorning them, and as I won't be doing much walking, I might be lucky to get away without crippling myself! Ye Gods! I'm actually starting to think about an OUTFIT! This is most definitely scary, but I want to make a good impression on his kids - his daughter's gorgeous. I may even stick some henna on my hair.

Having just read through that, and having just turned 37, is anyone thinking this may be a reaction to not wanting to hit 40? I must remember I'm not in my early 20's any more!

Wow, thank you everyone one for all my lovely facebook messages (those of you on there nayway lol). Not had so many before I don't think.

The day started by opening my present from Paul (ex-to-be). He bought me a cool t-shirt. Those on FB may have seen my photos of Bob the mini. I'm a bit of a mini nut (has to be the original, and the Italian Job has to be one of my all time faves), and this tee was a Haynes Manual mini tee. Fab. Only problem was, it was an XXL. Something like 3 sizes too big, and when I tried it on I could probably have fitted the kids in there with me! Hopefully it can be swapped, as it's great.

Mum sent me some money, which will be used on a new swimsuit (more on that later), and should stretch to a running jacket (non hi-viz) when added to what my MIL usually gives me. The 'kids' got me a box of chocolates, which apparently I have to share with them as they got them for me. Technically it was daddy, but as I'm not eating much chocolate they've had some too. Am now sitting down with the bottle of wine my SIL gave me.

So after presents, walking to school (where I was given a lovely hand made bead necklace), and the obligatory cuppa, it was on with the treadmill intervals. Started off ok, 10mins warm up, but only managed 5 of my 2min reps before I had to stop for a breather. Think the dodgy digestion and not feeling like eating much of ther last few days had an effect. Managed to make up the same time, but alternating 1min fast/slow instead of 2 fast/1 slow. Felt fine afterwards, just couldn't keep the energy going. Digestion is much better now, so hopefully all will be ok before the 16m on Friday.

After the first proper lunch I've eaten since Saturday, it was off to the pool. First hitch - I'd forgotten to wash & dry the swimsuit, so it was still a little damp when I put it on. and when you wear your costume to the pool, it helps to take undies for when you come out. Oh well lol. Definitely need a new suit though. This one is rather baggy round the bust now, and was a tad saggy round the backside when I got out too! JJB have a good one I've got my eye on, supposed to be 100% chlorine resistent. Hopefully will be able to get into town soon.

Back home again and it was getting ready for weigh-in. Wore a skirt I've not worn in donkeys, which was good, especially as it wasn't tight or uncomfortable. Wasn't sure how this week was going to go. No long run, and eating has been a bit haphazzard wiith the guts, so I was amazed to find I'd lost 4lbs! 4st 12 now, with 2lbs nefore I get my 5st award. I'm now the lightest i've been since joining in October 2007, and possibly the lightest since before I had Becky 8 1/2 years ago. I tried looking for my old book from when I first joined SW when Thomas was a babay, but don't know where I've put them. Took some before pictures in, with the copy of the Exbury one that arrived this morning, and they went down a treat. Everyone loves before & after pics. My consultant even sait it looked like I'd lost more this week and that she was proud of me. If I get my 5st I will disclose the before pictures. A few of you have seen me much bigger, and the photos on facebook and here hint at it, but they're not the biggest. I'm far from proud of them, but I am proud of how I'm turning it all around.

Probably didn't help matters by stuffing pizza, followed by coffee cake and a few chococlates, washing it down with vino. But it's only your birthday once a year, and everyone knows post weigh-in syns don't count ;0).

Will be working it off with another bike ride tomorrow and a 16m run Friday. Decided I'm trying an out and back route tis time. i'm bored with the usual 12+m route as I use it for cycling too, and the village is only 5m round the outskirts, so it would take a hell of a lot of zig-zagging to get to 16m, so until I can work out another route of that distance (laps are demoralising!), out and back it is. Trouble is, I've heard the weather is changing :(.

Happy St Patrick's Day x

Definitely think I must have a bit of the bug that's going round everywhere. Guts still not perfect today, though a tad better than the last couple of days. It's nothing serious, but uncomfortable and not right. Still not eaten much today. Can't decide what to eat a sI don't fancy anything.

Still, didn't stop me going swimming as usual. Went earlier than usual, and boy was it crowded! Don't like Tuesday swims as it's always busier. Going to turn this session into an endurance session and stick with breaststroke I think. I tend to go wonky doing crawl and can't work my way round everyone as well as trying not to drown. So 40 lengths without stopping completed. Adding a couple of lengths for dodging the traffic and trying to find space along the wall. One group were nattering for at least 6 lengths! What not sit in the coffee shop? Much more civilised and probably cheaper. Had to buy new goggles when I got as I've mislaid my original pair. Think they realised I was intending on buying new ones anyway, and have hidden somewhere.

Grabbed something from the vending machine on the way out as I always finish a swim ravenous. Then it was on the bike and across the forest. Took the log way round to the road that heads out there to make up the miles. I was aiming for 15 today, and the loop I do is a couple of miles short. Was a bit windy in places, and it took a couple of miles to get the legs working properly, but the rest of it wasn't too bad. Since I sorted the front brakes out I feel I'm riding a lot more easily, so I think the brake was rubbing on the wheel.

Kept a pace of 10.7mph, which isn't fantastically speedy by a long shot, but is a bit better than what I've been doing and included a few little hills. The last 3 miles are filled with junctions too, so that will have slowed me down a bit. Tummy wasn't too happy when I got back, and neighter was the head when I realised I'd done 14.94m. I mean, who stops at .94?! It's only a few more yards down the road! Drank a glass of water, found something to eat, had a shower and was soon ok. Digestion seems to be holding out after dinner so far too. Not that I had much. Just hope everything is ok tomorrow as I don't fancy running with a dodgy digestive system. It's not very comfortable and I feel horribly bloated at times. Still, I can get into my jeans again, so I'm not complaining :).

Just about had enough time for a cuppa before heading off to school and gardening club. Lost the kids for half an hour as theid dad picked them up and took them off somewhere. Becky scuttled off upstairs as soon as they got back, and I was given a card and flat floppy present for tomorrow (it's my birthday). Got a cheque in the card from my mum, so I can buy a new swuimsuit. Mine is definitely getting saggy now.

Starting to get a long list of things I want/could do with now - a new bike helmet, new bike, proper bike shoes & pedals, hydration system for the bike, more cycle shorts, more running tights, running socks, non hi-viz jacket, hi-viz gillet, second bladder for the camelback for energy drink, ladies anatomical saddle, small bike bags, more running speed, more cycling speed..... it's going to cost me a flippin fortune!

Oh, and yep, I ordered the photo :). Coldn't NOT really. It's got to be the best running one I've had. And did I mention I was wearing a really cool number?

Official time was 1:10:52. I'm happy with that taking into consideration all other factors.

This morning I had the usual post run niggle in my left thigh. It's been bothering me on and off for a while, not getting any worse and has it's better days, so I'm not too worried. Can't pinpoint where the problem is either. It will get better given time, but I will keep an eye on it.

The main after effect has been on my digestion. I don't know if it definitely was due to eating too close to racing, or possibly a mild case of what Thomas came down with Thursday that made him sick. There's a lot of d&v going round school. Last time my guts felt like this was after the Reading Half 2 years ago when I used Lucozade gels. They have to be the worst creation going! It's not a full blown tummy bug from either end (sorry if TMI), but I've not really felt like eating much all day. Feel things are finally starting to settle down now.

So now we're on the final push to Brighton. I have long runs of 16, 18 & 20  ove rthe next 2 weeks, before the gently plod of High Legh take 2 (too far off a pb to be tempted to push it there) the week before. Still haven't sorted accommodation for Brighton, and not sure the finances will stretch thanks to not selling something yet I'd hoped to, so I can see me kipping in the car. Good job I'm not tall. I'm quite happy doing that, as long as I can find somewhere quiet.

Had a day off today, was meant to be sorting some stuff in the garage, but my transport let me down, so I replaced the strings of the guitar instead. It now has a full quota, but sounds awful until the tuner arrives. I'm obviously tone deaf, which could be interesting playing a musical instrument. Took a leisurely stroll to the shops too, making the most of the lovely weather. Tempted fate by turning the heating off too.

Tomorrow will see me back in the pool, with a bike ride afterwards. Really need to start increasing the long rides on a Tuesday now, ready for London to Bournemouth. Going to up the lengths of crawl too, so might have to go a bit earlier. This could mean missing my cup of tea when I get home from walking the kids to school!

I will leave you with a couple of photos from yesterday. This one is at the finish http://www.seemeinaction.com/gallery/index.php?do=photocart&viewImage=74673, and this one at half way, along the beach http://www.seemeinaction.com/gallery/index.php?do=photocart&viewImage=74208. I like this one, and may be tempted to actually buy it, considering I have no other pictures, being there by myself. And it is such a cool number to be wearing :)

I love this race :). Probably on a par with High Legh, but without the bloggy following (cos there's not the concentration down here as there is up there), but those of you living down south nea the New Forest should try it. Run by my local running club (not that I beling to them yet, but I did run with them a few times in the past), and the route is completely rural and a short section goes along the beach. It's lovely on a sunny day like today.

Last night I was all up for going for a pb. I reckoned that if I could do 5m over some horrible hills at 11:40 pace, I should be able to scrape enough off on the flat to possibly be in with a a chance of beating my 1:06:18 from last year. Wasn't to be.

Felt fine when I got up, although unusally nervous as this was the first race I would actually race, with expectations, and had the usual pre-race porridge, but I think I ate it too late, and my guts never felt right after that. Jumped on the bike to cycle the 5m there and soon got caught up in a long line of cars all heading for Exbury Gardens. Parked the bike, used the loo (proper ones here, not a portaloo in sight) and had a coupleof cups of the proper coffee I'd brought with me.

Spent some time people watching, and saw lots of familiar faces from the previous times I've done this race. I think a lot of people come back each year. So far i've run 3 out of 3 now. Then dumped my bag at the info desk and congregated at the very low key start. The only warning you get the race has started is when everybody in front of you moves :).

I knew within the first half a mile it ouldn't be a good idea going for a pb, and while it didn't feel too bad at the time, I realised I must have gone off a bit too fast as the first mile came out at 10:18! There is a general downhill to the sea and uphill on the way back, but it wasn't that good! Wasn't until almost 2 miles before I settled into my stride. got overtaken wuite a bit, and one chap asked me where my red laces were as I was wearing my FLM shirt. He still had his in and ran the very hot 2007 too.

Thanks to the rain over the last 2 days there was a lovely mud puddle at the entrance to the footpath down to the beach, but nothing too bad. A short bit along shingle where you have to go right to the edge of the path to get more compacted ground, then you can jump on the sea wall which is easier to run on, though a tad narrow. Smiled at the photgrapher, walked through the drink station, then turned round ready for the second half. The half a mile at half way is nice as it doubles back on itself and you can see other people and guage how many are behind you.

The guts were starting to feel a bit better by now, but the legs are starting to tire, and as I have to power my way up hills (I admit, I like a good hill and am actually reasonably strong up them) it was hard keeping it going at the top. Managed to pass a couple of people though. About 6k things didn't go well for a while and I was just trying to keep it steady. Miles 4 and 5 came out at 11:51 and 11:54 so I had slowed quite badly.

I perked up a bit at 8k a sI knew the rest of it would be flat, apart from a little hill in the gardens. I tucked myself in behind a couple of women and kept pace with them. I could probably have gone a bit faster, but I'd overtaken them and they'd caught me back as one of them was walking in places. Must have really annoyed her by sitting on her shoulder and then darting past her at 9k, for ahich I apologise, but needs must.

The last km is through the gardens, and is lovely. Only problem is, they're open to the general public, and allow dogs. Passed a chap with 2 little yappy things not thinking much of it, when I suddenly felt one of them sniffing my ankles! Still, was more concerned with trying to catch this woman in blue I'd been chasing. She was walking short sections and would speed off again, so I never did manage to catch her. Got the last mile down to 11:30, with the last 0.2 at 11:14. Guts were still a bit dodgy at the end, which really annoyed me. Garmin time was 1:10:38, so 4:20 outside the pb, but my second fastes time by a long shot. Oh, and I beat the lovely 70 year old lady that I'm sure beat me my first year of doing this one!

Usually I have no problem, with porridge pre-race, but usually I have longer between eating & racing, and I think if I'd stuck with the usual weetabix I would have been fine and may even have got a bit closer. I still have belly ache now where whatever is bothering me has to work it's way through.

Hung around for a bit to have a drink and get the legs working properly again before heading off on the 5m cycle home. Not that was NOT fun. cycling home into a headwind most of the way after running a 10k is not my idea of enjoyment. Finally got home, had my bottle of chocolate milk I'd forgotten to take, ate the 'cherry infused raisins' from the goody bag and promptly curled up on the settee with dog for a nap. Only to be woken an hour later by the kids being brought home.

Official time not up yet, but will only be a few seconds slower at most, so while I would have loved a pb after some recent good running, I was aiming for anything between 1:10 and 1:12, so I'm happy with what I did, considering the guts and never having cycled to a race before. Means I won't be chasing anything at HL (if I was really close I would have gone for the pb there), which is probably good seeing as it's the week before Brighton. I will just be enjoying a gentle trot as my last long run.

Really should have a shower now I think. Becky politely informed me I stank lol. Happy Mothers Day to all the mums out there x

I have found a new way to increase arm and shoulder strength, and it has nothing to do with weights.

With no long run to do today, and both kids back at school, I spent the day in the loft again. Now the only way in and out is to balance precariusly on the top of the handrail at the top of the stepladder and haul yourself through the hatch. Coming down is controlled lowering until your foot hits the bar.

Anyway, Paul was due down to drop his fiance off for her volunteering stint in the charity shop, so I made the most of it and sorted out a load of stuff for him to take back seeing as he had an empty car. It wasn't anywhere near empty by the time I'd finished, and there's still some stuff left over. That's not to mention what else I will be sorting out in the morning ready for him to take back after dropping Thomas at a party. By my reckoning there's probably another couple of car loads of his stuff up there.

i'm quite amazed at howw much space there is already. Might actually be able to walk around up there properly soon, especially if I can get some shelving up there. I remember when I was a kid, about Becky's age (8'ish), I would love going up in the loft with dad. He would be sat up there at a table surrounded by all sorts of bits and pieces, tinkering away with this and that, while I would rummage in the dark corners. Was never the same after my parents got the house extended.

In the absence of running and cycling, I've been cross training this evening (well it is supposed to be a runningblog so I have to get some of the terminology in there somewhere) in the form of teaching myself the guitar. Now I loved playing Guitar Hero on the x-box, and Rock Band at new year with my best mate and friends was fab, and I've often thought about getting one, but I'd forgotten about the acoustic guitar we had in the loft. Can't remember where it came from, but I thought it about time it was put to good use.

Now if you want to play the guitar, a full quota of strings would be good. First stop, ebay. New strings (heaven knows what brand/size, but they were cheap), and tuner (also cheap), are now  on their way. Next stop, online tuition. Bloody hell, my fingers weren't built for guitar playing! Far too stumpy. But I tried, and now my fingertips hurt. Think I've sort of got the hang of it and can just about play a chord. That was until I sliced my finger ope on a protruding bit of string. Now I'm not playing any more. Too flippin dangerous!

So, with no kids to worry about until Sunday afternoon I will be catching up with some sleep tomorrow, as long as the cats don't wake me up early, then cycling to the shop for some food & a birthday present, loadsa pasta tomorrow night, then up early to cycle to the race Sunday. So no mothers day cards or cup of tea in bed for me. I will be waking up by myself (ok, not a lot new there these days), cycling to the race by myself, cycling home to an empty house and coming on here with you lot lol.

Right, talking of sleep, I'm off. Didn't sleep too well last night. think the sqishy white bread toast & butter I ate disagreed with my guts and gave me belly ache in the middle of the night. Or it could have been Thomas' bug rubbing off on me.
