I love this race :). Probably on a par with High Legh, but without the bloggy following (cos there's not the concentration down here as there is up there), but those of you living down south nea the New Forest should try it. Run by my local running club (not that I beling to them yet, but I did run with them a few times in the past), and the route is completely rural and a short section goes along the beach. It's lovely on a sunny day like today.
Last night I was all up for going for a pb. I reckoned that if I could do 5m over some horrible hills at 11:40 pace, I should be able to scrape enough off on the flat to possibly be in with a a chance of beating my 1:06:18 from last year. Wasn't to be.
Felt fine when I got up, although unusally nervous as this was the first race I would actually race, with expectations, and had the usual pre-race porridge, but I think I ate it too late, and my guts never felt right after that. Jumped on the bike to cycle the 5m there and soon got caught up in a long line of cars all heading for Exbury Gardens. Parked the bike, used the loo (proper ones here, not a portaloo in sight) and had a coupleof cups of the proper coffee I'd brought with me.
Spent some time people watching, and saw lots of familiar faces from the previous times I've done this race. I think a lot of people come back each year. So far i've run 3 out of 3 now. Then dumped my bag at the info desk and congregated at the very low key start. The only warning you get the race has started is when everybody in front of you moves :).
I knew within the first half a mile it ouldn't be a good idea going for a pb, and while it didn't feel too bad at the time, I realised I must have gone off a bit too fast as the first mile came out at 10:18! There is a general downhill to the sea and uphill on the way back, but it wasn't that good! Wasn't until almost 2 miles before I settled into my stride. got overtaken wuite a bit, and one chap asked me where my red laces were as I was wearing my FLM shirt. He still had his in and ran the very hot 2007 too.
Thanks to the rain over the last 2 days there was a lovely mud puddle at the entrance to the footpath down to the beach, but nothing too bad. A short bit along shingle where you have to go right to the edge of the path to get more compacted ground, then you can jump on the sea wall which is easier to run on, though a tad narrow. Smiled at the photgrapher, walked through the drink station, then turned round ready for the second half. The half a mile at half way is nice as it doubles back on itself and you can see other people and guage how many are behind you.
The guts were starting to feel a bit better by now, but the legs are starting to tire, and as I have to power my way up hills (I admit, I like a good hill and am actually reasonably strong up them) it was hard keeping it going at the top. Managed to pass a couple of people though. About 6k things didn't go well for a while and I was just trying to keep it steady. Miles 4 and 5 came out at 11:51 and 11:54 so I had slowed quite badly.
I perked up a bit at 8k a sI knew the rest of it would be flat, apart from a little hill in the gardens. I tucked myself in behind a couple of women and kept pace with them. I could probably have gone a bit faster, but I'd overtaken them and they'd caught me back as one of them was walking in places. Must have really annoyed her by sitting on her shoulder and then darting past her at 9k, for ahich I apologise, but needs must.
The last km is through the gardens, and is lovely. Only problem is, they're open to the general public, and allow dogs. Passed a chap with 2 little yappy things not thinking much of it, when I suddenly felt one of them sniffing my ankles! Still, was more concerned with trying to catch this woman in blue I'd been chasing. She was walking short sections and would speed off again, so I never did manage to catch her. Got the last mile down to 11:30, with the last 0.2 at 11:14. Guts were still a bit dodgy at the end, which really annoyed me. Garmin time was 1:10:38, so 4:20 outside the pb, but my second fastes time by a long shot. Oh, and I beat the lovely 70 year old lady that I'm sure beat me my first year of doing this one!
Usually I have no problem, with porridge pre-race, but usually I have longer between eating & racing, and I think if I'd stuck with the usual weetabix I would have been fine and may even have got a bit closer. I still have belly ache now where whatever is bothering me has to work it's way through.
Hung around for a bit to have a drink and get the legs working properly again before heading off on the 5m cycle home. Not that was NOT fun. cycling home into a headwind most of the way after running a 10k is not my idea of enjoyment. Finally got home, had my bottle of chocolate milk I'd forgotten to take, ate the 'cherry infused raisins' from the goody bag and promptly curled up on the settee with dog for a nap. Only to be woken an hour later by the kids being brought home.
Official time not up yet, but will only be a few seconds slower at most, so while I would have loved a pb after some recent good running, I was aiming for anything between 1:10 and 1:12, so I'm happy with what I did, considering the guts and never having cycled to a race before. Means I won't be chasing anything at HL (if I was really close I would have gone for the pb there), which is probably good seeing as it's the week before Brighton. I will just be enjoying a gentle trot as my last long run.
Really should have a shower now I think. Becky politely informed me I stank lol. Happy Mothers Day to all the mums out there x
