Overview

I just realised that this overview was long overdue a catch up.

So, I joined Realbuzz in July 07 in a bid to keep motivated while i followed a 16 week training plan for the Great South Run. I went from complete non-runner to running the 10 mile course on the day. I think this did funny things to my confidence and self-belief and I found myself applying for a London Marathon place with Mind, the mental health charity.

I got the place and another training plan began. This one was badly affected by injuries, most notably compartment sydnrome in my right calf, but the incredible support on here kept me going, and whilst I still find it hard to believe, I completed the London marathon 2008.

From there onwards it's been a bit hit and miss, with times of being hugely motivated and times of being... well, less so!

The fact that I am still running at all seems to be quite an achievement to me, but in time i would like to get faster, and perhaps crack sub-5hrs at a marathon one day...

Sore back

Right, so it seems that my lower back didn't appreciate the fun I showed it this weekend... I followed up Saturday's 5 mile run with a 9-10 mile walk on Sunday which I think has just about finished it off. By last night I was almost in tears when i was walking, but with the power of ibuprofen and bio-freeze, it did calm down enough to get to sleep, and i'm back on the ibuprofen today as well. I've got an osteo appointment on Thursday which is good timing as at the last appointment I was so upbeat about how much it had improved that I almost thought he wouldn't offer me another appointment.

Short term I guess it's not too bad, I know that it'll get better again within a few days, but I really have to get it properly sorted before Trailwalker as otherwise I just can't see me getting through all 62 miles of the course, and I'm determined to not let the girls down, so i guess it's more core exercises for me!

I'm off shortly to a conference in Telford - I've been booked overnight in a motorway service station 'hotel'... which would be fine if i just had a car, but given i'm travelling up on the train means that once I've got a taxi there, I'm pretty much stranded for the evening, unless i fancy a quick trip to Burger King followed up with an hour on the slot machines!!  And Burger King and Weight Watchers don't really mix too well! Talking of which, I've lost 11 pounds so far since 5 Jan, so that is at least going well.

Hope you all have a more fun Tuesday evening than me!

Ah the lovely Telford! I have been twice for conferences (does anyone go for any other reason?!!) and both times have had to stay in Shrewsbury as all hotels full!
Have left you a message about your back!
Have fun with those slots!

Poor you. Maybe the running is just too much for your back and you would be ok with the walking bit. Let's hope the osteo can work his magic for you. What would we do without ibruprofen? A super well done on the 11lb weight loss - that is really good going.

Sorry to hear that your back is playing up. Make sure you keep taking regular analgesia and anti-inflammatory's. Well done on the weight loss. Enjoy the rest of your week

Great weight loss Katie, you think they could have held the conference somewhere a bit nicer with better food options. Hope it's not a Travelodge. I nearly burst in to tears at reception in one once after over 10 days on the road when they asked me if I wanted 'breakfast in a bag'. I think that's one of the most depressing sentences I've ever heard!

Hope the back improves soon, I'm sure it's just the cold or something. Your osteo sounds good, so make sure you listen to him!

Sorry to hear about your back, I'd recommend Voltarol tablets aka Dicloflanec (prescription) a miracle cure for back trouble, and essential kit for your Trailwalker! Best of luck at the osteo and hope it improves soon.

Well done on the weight loss that is some going and I feel ever so jealous, I just can't seem to eat healthily anymore, I love stodge!
