Overview

After trying since I was 26 to get a place, through the ballot, in the London Marathon I have finally got one at the grand old age of 32! It's only taken 6 years - I wonder how much slower I will be now that I am a good bit older?

I am aiming to do this Marathon in under three hours which is a really tough call as I am a good bit off that pace just now. Hopefully I can stay motivated enough to run between 4 to 6 times a week - but we'll see!

I hope to blog about my training to help motivate me during the long winter runs and to have a place to dump the random thoughts I have during my runs.

My first training run

Well I am now signed up for the London Marathon and it is four months and one week away and I am hoping to complete it in under 3 hours. My previous best was the Edinburgh marathon 2007 - I completed this in 3hrs 28mins but there was a strong wind that day which was very tiring.

I think my training is going to concentrate on doing long runs a lot as I think my failure to do this last year for Edinburgh made me hit the wall after approx. 18 miles and it really affected my time. It was also not too pleasant getting full leg cramp in both legs as I crossed the finish line. A spectator asked me if it was worth it when I was in extreme cramp enduced pain and holding onto the railing so that I could stay upright. My answer was - of course!!

Anyway, I did my first training run today in the dark. I ran home from work which took about 50 minutes and involved over half of the distance being on hills. I think it must have been about 6 - 6.5 miles. It felt good and I wasn't troubled by it at all which is a good sign. I think I will try and get up early and do a longer run into work tomorrow morning.

Crikey sounds painful! Not liking that picture at all. Being a first timer I'll be happy to get round and not be the last across the line, hopefully with no cramp or hitting the wall too badly.

Hey Gordon,
Go for it! Keep up the blogging - and the training - and I'll look forward to lots of tales of pain, black toenails and beer abstinence! (OK, maybe that last one is pushing it). Can you get out for a run at lunchtime? I do that once a week and it is a great way of getting some daylight at the moment!
All the best,
Kerri

Yep, I do run at lunch time as often as possible but it takes me away from playing games and pub lunches!!!
