The diary of a thirty something forty year old marathon runner and my quest to join the 100 Marathon Club.....12 13 down, 88 87 to go! Laughing

Ran my 1st half marathon aged 14 (Great North Run) and my second 19th years later (yep, the Great North Run again).

I'm a huge advocate of Heart Rate monitors and have been using them to help me train for the last 4 years or so. I'm currently using the Polar RS800 with the GPS G3 unit. Its the Mutts Nuts.

Was up and out of the door just before 0730 this morning. Just about perfect conditions for running. Cool, sunny and no wind with the slightest of breezes. Decided to stick with the current schema of things and run at 60% WHR/HRR which is pretty easy going at around about 9 minute miles.

After Friday and Saturday's lethargic runs I actually felt very good and full of running. Could have easily pushed the pace at a higher heart rate bhut am going to stick to doing my LSRs at 60% until the current wave of marathons are over. Certainly, not taxing the body too much so I feel that the pace is about right.

Have now entered Bungay Black Dog Marathon on the 18th April 10.

15 miles in 2 hours 15 minutes and 44 seconds. Average heart rate of 132 and a Polar PI rating of 65. Slowest 15 mile run to date (following on from last weeks slowest 13 mile run!).

Easy or recovery 8 miles tomorrow lunchtime.

No Little One to get up this morning as she (and 'er Indoors) are up North until Tuesday this week. So, only myself to get out of bed. Got up and was out of the door by 0815. Quite breezy when heading out but relatively very warm. Was sweating buckets on the way back home - ended up unzipping my jacket and letting it just flap about.

Thought that yesterdays run was lethargic, but todays was even more so! Not good. Starting to think that my thyroxine levels may be a little low and need tweaking upwards. The blood test from Monday gone will reveal all.

8 miles in 1 hour 10 minutes and 11 seconds. Average heart rate of 138 and a Polar PI rating of 62.

56 miles ran for the week.

Looking to do a 15 mile LSR first thing tomorrow. Hopefully, the legs will be working a little better than today and yesterday.

Wed 17th Mar 10

Had meetings all day but they finished in pretty good time. Got back to the hotel at around 1600 and headed out at around 1630 hours. The weather was cool and cloudy. Ran from Branston into and around Lincoln City and then back to Branston for a total of 9 miles. Reasonably flat with a couple of killer, steep hills just for fun. Ran at 60% WHR/HRR.

9 miles in 1 hour 21 minutes ands 2 seconds. Average heart rate of 131 and a Polar PI ratinf of 65.

Thur 18th Mar 10

Meetings went on and on. Didn't get back to the hotel until around 1800 and with dinner at 1900 there just wasn't really enough time to get a good run in so just took today as a rest day.

Rest day.

Fri 19th Mar 10

Was back in the office at midday. Did 3 hours in the office. Came home and then headed out for a run at about 1600 hours. Again, it was cool and cloudy with some very very light rain. Decided to knock out 10 miles at 65% WHR/HRR. Felt very lethargic initially but did get better as the run progressed. The light rain turned progressively worse throughout the run until it was raining very steadily with about 3 miles left to go.

10 miles in 1 hour 25 minutes and 3 seconds. Average heart rate of 138 and a Polar PI rating of 64.

Easy 8 miles tomorrow 1st thing.

Went for a very easy/recovery 8 mile run at lunchtime. Weather was a few degree's C warmer than yesterday and just a slight breeze on the way out. A much more enjoyable experience altogether.

Ran at 60% WHR/HRR and managed to comfortably keep my heart rate where I wanted it. One of the those runs where you could have ran for evermore. Finding that running at 5% WHR/HRR so much easier and more comfortable. 65% was my previous recovery/easy zone. The times at 60% are not that much slower. Polar PI ratings are much higher (better) too.

Anyway, 8 miles in 1 hour 9 minutes and 37 seconds. Average heart rate of 131 and a Polar PI rating of 69.

Drove up to Lincoln this afternoon for 3 days or project meetings starting tomorrow. Should be able to get out for runs each evening but may not be able to get my 8 milers in. Time could be a little tight.

Was at the Pathology unit before 0800 to have some blood taken for routine tests. Thought I would be towards the front of the queue but no. Ended up being about 30th! Coupled with a 12 hour fast I wasn't overly impressed. Had to wait for about an hour. In that time I couldn't help but notice that I was the youngest person there by about 20 years (and I'm 40 FFS) and about half the body weight of the average out patient too! They talk about the younger generation being obese but the elderly generation don't look in good nick either!
Managed to grab a hot bacon roll and then hot footed into work for about 0930.

Escaped from the office at lunchtime and went for an easy 8 mile run. Weather was a little odd. Very bright and sunny but very windy too and quite a bitter wind. Would have been very warm but for the wind.

Ran at 65% WHR/HRR (134 to 140 bpm). Outgoing was very easy but the return was straight into the head wind and made keeping the heart rate within the zone quite tricky coupled with the undulations. Was glad to get back!

8 miles in 1 hour 8 minutes and 8 seconds. Average heart rate of 137 and a Polar PI rating of 65.

Another easy (or recovery?) run tomorrow lunchtime and then shooting up to Lincoln for 3 days of meetings.

Was up and out of the house by 0735 this morning. Decided to run my LSR at 60% WHR/HRR instead of the usual recent 65%. This was going to be the slowest 13 miles that I have ever ran in my life!

The weather was sunny and a little breezy going out. As the run went on it became more cloudy, cooler and a little bit windy even.

Managed to stick at around 134 bpm or below for most of the run which translated in about 9.10 minutes per mile. Now that is slow for me. However, it was still well within the presribed LSR pace of 45 to 90 seconds slower than your marathon pace so no real dramas.

So, 13 miiles in 1 hour 59 minutes and 9 seconds. Average heart rate of 133 and a Polar PI rating of 64.

Got to have routine blood tests done 1st thing tomorrow so need to fast for 12 hours before hand. No food or drink after 2000 hours for me tonight! Frown
Should be able to get out at lunchtime for an easy 8 mile run. Will be looking for a 65% WHR/HRR run (134 to 140 bpm) tomorrow.

Had to work part of the day so didn't get out for a run until about 1530. Opened up a new pair of training shoes - my 3rd and final pair of Adidas Adistar Cushion (6's).I beleive that they are now Adidas Ride's. Should get around 12 months use out of them as I will rotate them with an older pair of the same shoes. Going to look at getting some Adidas Adizero Boston 2's. Decided that I will eventually do all of my running in lighter weight shoes. Will need to find some new race shoes too soon. My Adidas Rotterdam 4's have a round 450 miles on them and will probably survive the up and coming schedule but doubt they will last the year our. Will no doubt look at something else in the Adidas Adizero range.

Ran at about 60% WHR/HRR again today. Little bit slower than the previous todays but feeling very good indeed. Cannot remmeber so good 6 days post marathon. It was cool but the sum came out now and again and a little breezy too. On the whole, good running weather.

8 miles in 1 hour 10 minutes and 51 seconds. Average heart rate of 131 and a Polar PI rating 67.

59.27 miles ran for the week.

13 mile LSR 1st thing tomorrow.

Escaped from the office at lunchtime for another 8 mile recovery run. Looked very bright when I headed over to the gym to get changed but when I reappeared there were some pretty ominous dark clouds around. GPS battery was low as soon as I turned it on, so that was ditched back into my bag. So, just the HR readings today.

Another run at 60% WHR/HRR (124 to 133 bpm). Again, felt pretty good. The ominous dark coulds did there dirty deed 2 mlies after starting out. Pretty sizeable rain drops but not too torrential so didn't get that wet. The return was quite windy, much more so than yesterday.

Anyway, 8 miles in 1 hour 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Average heart rate of 131. No Polar PI rating.

Working tomorrow but should be back in reasonable enough time to get an easy 8 miles in before dinner.
