Overview

So I've decided to go naked and shun shoes for my running! I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject of barefoot running and it seems like something that might suit me so I'm giving it a go.

Been out twice so far doing about 2-3k each time round the cycle track near me and its been lots of fun! Its difficult to keep to a slow pace and not push myself to hard because you need to start gently to give your feet time to adjust to being free but overall its good.

I'm planning on running the Brighton Marathon and London (assuming I get in through the ballot) barefoot but I'm also going to invest in some of these http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/ for running at night and in places where I might otherwise have trouble completely barefoot.

I shall keep you updated!

21-07-09

Went out for my first completely barefoot run last night. Up to this point I have been jogging down to the cycle track and then taking my shoes off, but this time I went bare straight from the front door.
Concentrating on the ground in front of me is proving to be the toughest part of barefoot as normally I like to look around while I run, but I don't have much choice, especially running in Brighton!
One or two funny looks from people on the way round but I had the iPod on so I didn't hear any comments. When I stopped at the traffic lights I looked round to see an elderly lady just staring at my feet, so I just smiled and trotted off when the lights changed.
Worked out that I ran just over 4.5k but my calves are a little sore and I have the beginnings of a blister so I think that may have been too much too soon. Will rest up and go again tomorrow!

(un)Officially Faster!

I had decided to do my LSR on Saturday this week because I was going to a birthday party that evening and didn't want to run the next morning feeling worse for wear. On Friday afternoon BBC Radio Sussex called me up to ask if I would go in the next morning (at 7am!) to give my opinion on the newly published Brighton Marathon route. I was to be joined on the show by one of the race organisers, Tim Hutchings.
I had also decided to include parkrun as part of my 15 miles and was going to run off from the radio, do 12 miles ending at Hove Park and then do parkrun.

The radio bit went well, I voiced my concerns about a section of the course I thought mght be a bit of a problem and also got a plug in for my VFFs (which I have sent to Vibram, along with a request for some size 44's!). Then off I went along the coast. It was cloudy and a bit breezy which was fine by me, and then when I looped back and headed towards Hove Park I realised I would have to speed up a little if I was to get there in time.
I ran the last 3 miles of the 12 pretty fast but still got to parkrun after everyone had started. Luckily the pr organiser let me go anyway  so off I went playing catchup!  Despite having to dance around a broken bottle, I managed to overtake 79 others to finish with a gun time of 27:31. I had looked at the official stopwatch as I set off and it read 6:51 as I started running so my "chip time" was 20:40, which is more than 2 minutes faster than my previous shod pb! Unfortunately it wont count because I was late!

I'm slightly annoyed.

I seem to be developing a chest infection in the last 2 days so I really need to get well before the Sussex Beacon half marathon on the 21st.

What were the issues that you mentioned about the new HM route? I'm running it for the second time this year and have been trying to work out how far east it will go now that we go that way twice. will it be roughly the same paths that were used last year on that side of the pier?

It was the Full marathon that I had issues with. Namely the stretch from mile 20 - 23 around Shoreham power station, bit bleak!

As for the half, as far as I can tell from the new map, it doesn't even go as far as the marina this time. I'm glad they aren't using the undercliff walk now, though!
