Overview

Well after being rejected for the third time by FLM I chose not to go for a Club place and I entered the Belfast Marathon on 4th May '09 instead.

This was my second time at the Belfast race having run 3:31 there in 2005.  As some of you will know I've been running since 1981, run 18 marathons with a best time of 2:50 in London 1983.  Now at 52 my O50 PB was 3:30:05 in London '08 now it's 3:27:53 from Belfast 09!

I've been coaching for around 16 years mainly youngsters for track & field and cross country, but now I coach a group of adult road runners for distances up to the marathon.

I love running and helping runners and am a big fan of running Clubs, having been a member of one for 26 years. Anyone who wants any help just ask!

Happy running!

Double Day Wednesday

It was a busy day in work today and just as I was thinking that I might not run but just sit at my desk working Wendy came up and asked if I was running! What a life saver, I really needed a run and we got out for a 3.8 mile run. We started in bright sunshine and blue sky but very windy, unfortunately the wind blew the clouds over and we got very wet later in the run. Still 3.8 miles in 36:19 which is around 9:30 pace so not bad in windy conditions and Wenddy's first run for a week or so.

Tonight was one of the tougher Wednesday night sessions but not too tough really.  I met at the club with Jason, Simon and Sarah and we ran out to a local business park where there's a flattish 0.5 mile stretch.  The plan was for 4 x 0.5 mile fast with the same distance to jog back to recover.

As expected Simon and Jason, both sub 40 minute 10k runners, stretched out away from myself and Sarah but we ran well and did the first half mile in 3:12 for 6:27 pace. We then jogged back before starting the second effort I worked hard but felt stomach cramp part way through, I gritted my teeth and pushed to finish in 3:11 for 6:25 pace.

I then missed the third effort to make an unscheduled toilet stop, but jogged back with Sarah for the final effort. We pushed along but Sarah got away from me over the final 200m but I still managed to run 3:09 for 6:22 pace. We then ran back to the club for 6.5 miles at an average pace of 8:27 not bad considering the recoveries were at around 10 minute pace.

I probably won't make a double day tomorrow because of work but we've a good hill session planned at the Club tomorrow night.

Happy running!
