Overview

I think by now many of you know me already. I've been lingering around here for some time now. I started running in June 2007 and my life has never been the same since. That June I recieved a Golden Bond Place for The London Marathon 2008. An ambition of mine since I first saw it on the TV when I was a kid.

Whilst training for the London Marathon one question kept popping into my head, "I wonder how far I can run". So I started reading about a few people and was then introduced to a whole new world. Ultra running. I decided to take my time, so 2008 was all about marathons, but I had also entered a few ultra marathons for 2009. The biggest was The Highland Fling. This was 53 miles starting in the Scottish lowlands and finishing in the Highlands. It was tough and although I said to myself during the race "never again" I quickly changed my mind on the approach to the finish line.

I returned to my original question once again "how far can I run?". So once again taking it a year at a time I have signed up for my next race, The South Downs Way Race. This is a 102 mile ultra marathon starting in Eastbourne and finishing in Winchester following the South Downs Way (unsuprisingly).

I will be running for charity so that when I hit a low point I can tell myself that i'm doing this for a reason and that people are counting on me. I have some great fundraising ideas based upon my previous ultra marathons. Guess how many toenails I will loose, guess the time potentially there is big money in that one bearing in mind the cut off point is 32 hours.

I'm running for the Parkinson Disease Society. Bruce who is on my support crew Dad has Parkinson's disease  so he and his Mum has asked me to run for them. I'm only too happy to help. They help provide information, care and support for all people affected by Parkinson's and to fund vital research into the cause, prevention, treatment and cure.

It's a new dawn, it's a new day.....

and i'm feeling bloody great. For the first time in what seems like ages i'm ready to tackle the world again. I'll start with the negative bit first to get that out of the way. I was determined to get back to some good running last week and put some miles in my legs. I think I said in my last post that my stomach was too dodgy still to go for a run on the Tuesday. So I didn't. Very sensible i'm thinking.

Well it was still too dodgy on Wednesday aswell but I had the arse with it all by then and decided to for a run anyway. I only did 5 miles but was punished severely. I was as sick as a dog all night. Thinking I that I would win this battle with the illness I was determined to get out there for a run again on Thursday. Especially after reading Alastair's comment (you owe me an ultra now mate). I managed a mere mile before throwing up. At least I managed to bike to work and back each. That's something I suppose towards the fitness.

So I decided that I had lost the battle and I would take a couple of days off and go for a run on Sunday. Sunday came around soon enough and I was feeling ok. Although I didn't have much energy I thought I would be fine for a run. The first few miles were tough and it took some mental coaxing to get through them and new that I would be alright after a short while. 15.2 miles later I still had no energy and spent the rest of the afternoon slumped on the sofa but quietly pleased with myself that I go out there and did it.

I obviously hadn't fully recovered from the sickness bug because at 9:30 I couldn't stay awake any longer and went to bed. I slept for 11 hours solidly. I obviously needed it though because I feel fantastic today. No aches or pains (a first). Now the running is back on track I also have the excitement back for the next race ultrarace Grantham. Just 4 weeks to go.

It'sgoing to be a good week this week too.

Remember - you shouldn't train if your illness is below the neck! Take it easy, Matt. Give yourself a break for a few days. It could be potentially dangerous for you training too early, as your body may be dehydrated from the sickness.

I'm with you on the illness front.

I'm sick of the sight of mucus and the Sky+ is now at 90%+ storage for teh first time in over 5 years.

Fed up though.

Excellent stuff - it's surprising how much somebody else suddenly getting their mojo back cheers me up too :0)

Not the way that I'd chose to recover - running 15 miles - but well done anyway - and glad the training is back for your next race.
