My training was going well for the Southend 10km in October and the Great Eastern Run the week after,( both of which I had to cancel ) I thought I would go down to Spain for some R& R and some sunshine. Well 2 out of three wasn't bad. The sunshine eluded me for most of the time. ( unusual weather for the time of year) was the theme of converstaion. After a nights storms it was fine in the morning so at 6 am I was up and ready for my 5 mile run around the town and along the seafront. ( I had done this for the past week one day training one day resting ).

There was a puddle in front of me so what do you do . Run through it or stride over it. You guessed.. I took a longer stride to miss it and ...... crack.. my calf muscle just went and I was hopping along the road to the locals enjoyment. I managed to walk to the sea and imersed my calf in the cold water. I returned to my apartment and after calming down began the R.I.C.E. treatment. Well after spending the next few days hopping around I came home and went to see my friend who is a qualified Physio. I have had 5 sessions with him and now have managed to start training again.

I have managed a couple of sessions on the treadmill at my local gym and so far ( fingers crossed etc) everything is OK.

I am off to a 70th birthday party this weekend and I am looking forward to returning to the roads on Monday morning for a slow jog and see if all remains OK

Well I did it. How I managed it I am not too sure. I came home from work at 6am feeling very tired. I managed to have some breakfast ( porridge and honey) before falling asleep on the sofe whilst my dear wife got herself ready for work. I had intentions of going to the gym today to have a run but I kept telling myself " don't worry tommorow will be OK " However tommorow never comes so I donned my kit and went to the gym.Still telling myself I didn't have to do this. Once I was changed and into the gym it all seemed right. I managed 5 miles on the treddie and didn't feel too bad. I found my calf still a bit tight though so didn't go too fast. Did some streaches after and now find that the calf is feeling OK..... Right !!!  now to bed for a few hours... have a good day. It looks like a good one here in Essex.

Tuesday morning and everything feels OK. Have finished my first night shift of the week. I work in a very busy transport office and stand for most of my 8 hr shift.

I would love to go out and run again. However I must calm down and take it easy or else things will go pear shaped and I will have to be sidelined again. I have plenty of time to be fit and ready to go for the VLM so I will rest today. I have a few chores to do then to bed .

I have been very lucky to finish 49 marathons in my life so next years will be my last. I know many say Yeah I bet but at 64 I think I will concentrate on shorter events. Having said that I would be only too happy to join Keith in Durban next May....mmmmmmmmm  wonder what OH would say to that... answers on a post card please....

That went well. I have just come back from joging/walking 3.67 miles and so far everything seems to be OK. I didn't time it as all I wanted to do was to get round without any mishaps. I know the distance as I use the route for speed runs when I am fitter and have measured it via "Map my Run" web site.

I felt very nervouse before I started and had to keep talikng to myself not to find an excuse not to go out. It was very cold (well seemed it after the warm weather we have had) so I put on my winter leggings and a warm coat. Didn't need the coat after a few minutes but the leggings helped to keep my calf muscle warm. So all I have to do now is to hope all will be well for Wednesday and I will try again . This time I will try to run further before I think of taking a walk break. Tuesday will be a gym day. That is if I am feeling OK after my night shift.

It all went very well. However I have to wonder why people find it strange that you can go to a party and only drink soft drinks or even water. It is not that I am a prude but i don't enjoy alcohol. Also why do people take you at first glance. I told some people that I have an entry for the VLM and there response was " what at your age" ( I am 64 ) and "yeah and how long will that take you two weeks". In fact it is comments like that that spur me on to prove to them that I can and i will. Enough of that I have been home and have been out for a slow jog fast walk for 5 miles as it is such a nice day here in Essex. Hopefully i will not have any problems with my calf and all is set for my road run /jog on Monday. have to go to Gatwick on Sunday to collect my son and his partner after they return from holiday in Egypt. Come on the blues on Sunday....
